Lost or Found a Yorkie in South Africa?

Yorkshire Terriers are one of the most loved small breeds in South Africa — and also one of the most commonly reported lost on Lost Dogs SA. Their small size, quick movements, and high value make them vulnerable — but they are also highly recognisable, which means the community can help find them fast.

Why Yorkies go missing

• Small enough to slip through gates and gaps. A Yorkie can squeeze through a gap of just 8–10cm — check your fence line, gate gaps, and the bottom of palisade fencing.
• Easy to pick up. Unfortunately, Yorkies are sometimes taken because of their value and size.
• Fast and curious. Yorkies follow scents, people, and other dogs — they can be half a suburb away before you notice.
• Grooming and vet visits. Yorkies are often dropped at groomers or vets by well-meaning finders — call every groomer and vet within 5km.

If your Yorkie is lost

1. Search close to home first. Check under cars, behind pots, inside garages and garden sheds — Yorkies hide in small spaces when scared.
2. Knock on neighbours doors. A Yorkie can slip into a neighbour yard through a side gate and get stuck there.
3. Call all local vets and groomers. Yorkies are distinctive — vets remember them. Someone may have dropped yours off thinking it was a stray.
4. Post a clear, recent photo. Yorkies change appearance dramatically depending on their haircut — if your Yorkie was recently groomed, use a photo showing their current look.

If you found a Yorkie

1. Keep them safe. Yorkies are small, vulnerable, and easy prey for larger dogs or traffic. Bring them inside or into a secure yard.
2. Check for a microchip. Any vet will scan for free. Yorkies from registered breeders are almost always microchipped.
3. Check the collar. Many Yorkies wear personalised collars — check for a phone number engraved on the tag or buckle.

5. Be careful handing the dog over. Yorkies are valuable. Ask anyone claiming the dog to show photos on their phone or describe a unique feature — ear shape, tail set, or a distinctive marking.

Identifying a Yorkshire Terrier

• Size: Very small — typically 2–3 kg, standing about 20 cm tall.
• Coat: Long, silky, straight hair — usually steel blue on the body and golden tan on the head, chest, and legs. When groomed short, they look very different — more like a small dark puppy with tan points.
• Ears: Small, V-shaped, carried erect — one of the most distinctive features.
• Tail: Usually docked to medium length in SA, carried slightly higher than the back.
• Markings: Most have a golden tan face with a small dark muzzle and bright, intelligent eyes.

Microchipping is essential for Yorkies. Their small size means collars can slip off easily. If your Yorkie is not yet microchipped, do it — and keep your contact details updated on the microchip registry.
